Fascists Will Reap The Whirlwind

There can be no more pretensions. No more defence. No more self-righteousness. Fascist Sonia Gandhi and fascist Manmohan Singh must go. So far, in each of the scams, many have supported the PM as still being clean despite the huge scams that had unfolded and keep unfolding. No more! Both Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh have not only presided over neck-deep corruption, they have now presided over SIN! Sins against ordinary and peaceful men, women and children. The HAND they hold up to beg for votes from the Aam Aadmi has over and over again been raised to slap the Aam Aadmi. The same hand has encouraged or presided over stealing of public funds, atrocities on innocents and proposing draconian laws.

In my previous post (The fast & the spurious) I had mentioned that some of our media outlets not only indulge in yellow journalism they also play the role of the anarchist. The midnight drama involving Delhi police carrying out a lathi-charge and lobbing teargas shells on people who were sleeping is as good a symbol of anarchy as you can get. With channels like CNN-IBN, Headlines Today and Star News firmly on the side of the government in tarnishing Baba Ramdev directly in every which way possible the government was emboldened to carry out action they think they can get away with. As expected not one single media channel has termed this action as criminal and disproportionate.

It is now beyond tolerance of a democracy to have a foreigner and a foreign born person with little understanding of this vast country to be dictating actions and laws for this nation. Anna Hazare has already asked for the government to resign and it is a valid and fair demand. Demands on Lokpal, black money etc. can now wait for a fresh government. The first demand has to be clearly that foreigners or foreign-born people who are not of Indian origin should not be holding any public office. It is not just Sonia Gandhi who should be out of any public office. The fact that this Congress is attempting to promote Rahul Gandhi as a future PM of this country bodes ill for India. This nation is under danger, clear and grave danger.

The extra-constitutional body called the National Advisory Council must be disbanded.  It has become almost a parallel government ministry outside the regular norm. A coterie of people who are close to Sonia Gandhi work to draft and impose draconian laws on this country. It has become a resort for anti-hindu people, some who are embroiled in legal cases. Teesta Setalvad, involved in criminal cases and seeking anticipatory bail, is on the draft committee of the Communal Violence Bill. If this NAC has its way very soon being a Hindu will automatically amount to being a criminal. This must not come to pass. (Read the analysis of this draft bill at Calamur and Offstumped.)

This is also the same government that refuses to take strong action against separatists and those accused of sedition. Wait, it actually rewards people like Binayak Sen, by elevating him to the planning commission. He has already been convicted and is out on bail and at the very least they should have waited for him to be exonerated. I had also warned in my post ‘This Dog Bites’ that the main worry against Ramdev is neither corruption nor black money. The main worry for the Congress is clearly the colour of his clothes and the elections in UP and other states in 2012. And post the atrocious attack in the middle of the night Congress spokespersons continue to ridicule and tarnish Ramdev as if he were some national enemy. Imagine the confluence of a thousand gutters and you can imagine the stench flowing out of the mouth of a Digvijay Singh. Our media celebrates this gutter mouth as if he were some spiritual leader.

There never was and never will be any serious attempt on the part of this corrupt government to either tackle corruption or to tackle black money or bring back money. What is that? Setting a thief to catch a thief? But there is no doubt that the agitation will now intensify. The Congress has sowed the most violent wind. The whirlwind will follow.

Radhika Tanwar Murder: The Scavengers Are Out

Within a couple of days of the horrible murder of Radhika Tanwar, a Delhi college student, our News channels were out screaming for justice.  The constant screams were  ‘48 hours and no arrest, 72 hours and still no arrest’! While one sympathizes with the victim and the family nothing can explain this outrageous behaviour by the media. CNN-IBN has even announced a special program ‘Justice For Radhika’! Looks like they seem convinced Radhika won’t get justice or that CNN-IBN would be the one to force police action to render justice to the victim. All this within three days of the incident.

While there is a lot to be desired of our police services they are surely not magicians to trace a killer in what was almost a ‘hit and run’ murder in a public place, with no witnesses coming forward. Little does the media seem to appreciate that investigating crimes is painstaking work and requires a great deal of scientific and logical process. Chest-beating by the media is more a hindrance than any use to an investigation. Have they forgotten the Aarushi case already?

CNN-IBN now has egg on its face for prematurely trying to run a campaign called ‘Justice for Radhika’. This is almost akin to scavenging. At the time of writing this the Delhi police have already arrested a person called Vijay alias Ram Singh in what seems to be an outcome of some sensible investigative work. Due process will reveal whether Vijay was indeed the killer but all evidences and history seem to add up.

There is a need for the media to report but equally important to allow reasonable time for police officials to do their jobs. Excessive breast beating only hampers investigations. One hopes CNN-IBN learns a lesson and shows restraint and patience.

A word on DCP Dhaliwal. He comes across as a level-headed and well meaning police officer. But he would do well not to speak to the media when he is in the middle of an investigation of a terrible crime. This is best left to the PRO of the police department.

The pattern appears to be clear. Nothing works like a good crime for our media. A good sensational crime and the scavengers will be in great business. Sick! Venal!

Saving Delhi – Part 1: Get The Weapons

How to make Delhi safer – Part 1 : Get the weapons!

International Women’s Day in India was greeted with the cold blooded murder of a Delhi student, Radhika Tanwar. She was 21 and on her way to college. One can sympathize with her family and friends but there is no way we can feel or experience the pain it has brought them. Around the same time the stupid body called UN inducted Iran into the UN ‘Women’s Council’. So much for women’s rights. And if you think that is horrendous, the UNHCR was about to pass a resolution praising Libya’s human rights record. This even as a civil war is raging in Libya. It may be time to dismantle the useless body called UN. That’s whole different topic. But it may also be time to take a serious look at safety and security in Delhi and take a series of strong measures.

I am no security expert or political administrator. But this series intends to look at a few steps that are definitely ‘do-able’ to make Delhi safer and get rid of the ‘Crime Capital’ tag it has acquired. A long time back New York  under Rudi Guiliani and the head of the police department dramatically reduced crime in NY. That was a city infested with criminals, mafia and if it can be done in NY, it can be done in Delhi too. This could apply to all other metros too.

Not long ago Tejender Khanna, the Lt. Governor of Delhi, made a statement that “north Indians liked to break the law” and P. Chidambaram blamed it on migrants. Sure enough, PC was lambasted for his statement but there is some truth in what he said. That will be taken up in later parts in this series but let’s take the first step. Get rid of weapons in private hands.

Before that a central security agency needs to be formed. Very frequently the Delhi government, the Union Home ministry and the police play a blame game on crime and security. This can be stopped by forming a new central body like an ‘NCT Security Force’. Following which some ordinances need to be passed. The first among them should be to get rid of weapons. Here is what the ordinance should look like:

Ordinance to surrender all guns held by private citizens, legal and illegal:

1.   Pass an ordinance requiring all citizens, other than police and security forces, to surrender all guns within 7 days to the nearest police station. Guns can be regular or  country-made or whichever way the govt. wishes to describe them. This includes guns for legal hunting. Rifles and guns used for sporting pursuits can be returned after due verification. Even some types of swords may be called for surrender.

2.   If not surrendered within 7 days provide for a penalty of Rs.1o  lakhs and imprisonment for 1 year. In case of inability pay the monetary penalty extend the imprisonment for an additional two years.

3.   On expiry of the 7-day limit start a massive combing operation to weed out  guns from society. Make random checks on citizens coming into Delhi to ensure no new weapons come in. The combing operations may reveal a lot more than just weapons.

4.   Shut down all guns and ammunition shops. These should be sold only through police department outlets under the strictest supervision and monitoring.

I am positive there will be those who will argue that murders can be committed even with kitchen knives. It is this kind of faulty and silly logic that stops governments from acting. These steps do not imply that crime will be totally eliminated. That’s like eliminating evil people itself, which is not going to happen. But it sure will make a big difference and the steps I am recommending differentiate wanton crimes on the streets and other crimes. Motivated murder may not stop. Street crimes can be prevented, if not eliminated. Motivated murder does not need weapons. One can strangle a person with bare hands. But it does make killing a lot more difficult.

This may appear to be a diversion from my usual posts on the media. But if the Editors’ Guild got together and devised 10 steps to reduce and prevent crimes in Delhi such posts would not be needed. The Editors’ guild can not only devise those steps but strongly petition the government to act on it. But they won’t! On the contrary the media feasts on crimes. It is their bread and butter. This series will have 10 parts and will recommend 10 simple and doable steps to reduce crime on the streets of Delhi. This may well apply to other cities too. If you have suggestions, I welcome those.
